Since the height of the European migration crisis in 2015, a scholarly debate about the role of digital communication practices in supporting migrants has been held. Following this research line, this doctoral thesis contributes to research on the digital communications strategies developed by irregular migrant women to cope with challenges faced during the post-migration process, with multiple intersections such as race, gender, or citizenship status being additional forms of oppression. Those challenges involve seeking for employment, accessing information, or engaging in social and cultural activities without a visa permit to work or stay at the destination country. Their irregular status prevents them from accessing formal and non-precarious employments, integrating in the foster society without fearing of being deported, or even reporting physical and mental abuses. Hence, this doctoral thesis has a high social and international impact as it raises the debate of the invisibility of irregular migrant women around the world, and how the development of digital communication strategies to navigate the new environment. There is a lack of studies focused on the use of digital communication strategies by irregular migrant women once they are settled at the destination country. This thesis aims to explore how irregular migrant women from Latin America living in Spain develop digital communication strategies to cope with daily challenges during the postmigration process. It also intends to produce knowledge on digital migration with a view to enhance irregular female migrant´s adaption process at the host society. Specifically, this thesis explores —from a constructivist paradigm— the digital communication strategies developed by irregular migrant women through qualitative methods. In total 17 interviews with regular and irregular migrant women, 20 participants observations in weekly workshops where irregular migrant women participate, and conversational observations in a WhatsApp group (1437 textual interactions, 479 visual pieces and 1.151 emojis) were analysed. To do so, qualitative content analysis and Constant Comparative Method were used as analytical strategies with the aim to explore a) the purposes of using social media platforms and online communities by irregular migrant women; b) the themes discussed on the platforms afore mentioned; c) the participatory dynamics of migrant women in a WhatsApp group. The findings reveal that irregular migrant women from Latin America living in Spain have unconsciously developed digital communication strategies when they move to another country. In total, five strategies have been found: S1) Use of social media platforms and online communities (primary WhatsApp and Facebook) to obtain emotional support; S2) Use of social media platforms and online communities (mainly WhatsApp and WhatsApp groups) to access information; S3) Use of social media platforms and online communities to engage in leisure activities (WhatsApp groups); S4) Use of social media platforms and online communities (specifically WhatsApp and its groups) for job search; S5) Use of online communities (WhatsApp groups) for the exchange of products and services. In general, the use of digital platforms is vital intheir process of integration and especially as a key element of emotional support.es_ES
