    Anthropometric profile and position-specific changes in segmental body composition of professional football players throughout a training period

    Body and anthropometric profiles of football players vary depending on the physiological and technical demands imposed by different positions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the body composition of professional soccer players in relation to their position on the field during a training macrocycle. The Direct Segmental Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis method was used to analyze 58 players at six key moments of the macrocycle. The results show that body profiles are adjusted to the specific demands of each position. Midfielders showed the lowest muscle mass, while defenders showed many notable changes. In general, as the season progressed, all field players experienced an increase in trunk body fat. Fat and lean mass values of goalkeepers differed greatly from the rest. The greatest variations in body composition were observed during pre-season and transition in relation to variations in training load and competitive intensity. The results suggest that the phase of the macrocycle has a greater influence on these variations, although the physical characteristics of each position are relevant. Understanding these dynamics allows for the design of more personalized and efficient training programs to optimize the performance of footballers according to their roles and each stage of the season.

    Differences in physical activity recommendations, levels of physical activity and main barriers to exercise between Spanish and Polish cancer patients

    Background/Objectives: Physical activity (PA) and exercise have demonstrated numerous benefits for patients with cancer. However, there may be different barriers which vary according to geographical area. The aim of this study was to compare oncologists, PA recommendations, PA patterns and barriers in two different geographical areas. Methods: A total of 254 patients were included, 239 of them women and 15 of them men, while 41.3% of the sample was Polish and 58.7% of the sample Spanish. Results: In terms of differences in time spent on PA per day, the Spanish spent more time walking than the Polish did (p = 0.007). However, no significant differences were found between countries, types or intensity of exercise, and there was a significant relationship between age and type of PA modality (p = 0.002). At the same time, there were different reasons for not practicing PA (p = 0.009). The subsequent analysis showed that younger adults were prone to more vigorous-intensity exercise than the other age groups (p = 0.001, η2 = 0.08). Furthermore, there was a significant difference between age groups, countries and sitting time (p = 0.01), with Polish patients spending more time sitting than Spaniards (p = 0.01, η2 = 0.06). Conclusions: Although PA patterns in the two countries were similar, the main barriers to exercise differed. Therefore, PA programs should be as personalized as possible (taking into account sociodemographic, cultural and climatic characteristics). Ultimately, to improve the quality of life and health of their patients, oncologists should provide those activities that are most beneficial to their patients.

    Pro-environmental transformation of cultural institutions through sustainable infrastructural projects: a case study of Poznan

    The aim of the article is to elucidate pro-environmental solutions and activities, consonant with the tenets of sustainability and enduring developmental paradigms, implemented within the infrastructural purview of the cultural institutions situated in Poznan—a municipality located in western Poland. A diagnostic scrutiny was executed encompassing the entirety of municipal cultural entities, constituting a cumulative assemblage of 15 establishments, all of which were extended invitations to participate in this investigation. Interrogations were directed towards ascertaining their strategic, environmentally conscientious determinations vis à vis the construction, renovation, or modernization of edifices during the temporal expanse of 2021 and 2022. Ultimately, responses germane to the posed inquiries were proffered by 7 institutions, as the remaining entities refrained from financial investments during the stipulated timeframe. The discerned outcomes illuminate the manifold pro-environmental measures and endeavors embraced by these institutions within the domain of infrastructural initiatives. These initiatives pertain to ecological considerations, safeguarding the natural milieu, and fortifying sustainability, encompassing facets such as energy and water conservation, the abatement of water and air contaminants, recycling endeavors, the utilization of renewable materials, the afforestation of vicinities, and the mitigation of the ostensibly designated “heat island effect”, among sundry others. These initiatives are not only significant for the current ecological situation worldwide, but they also appear to be crucial for the better future of the next generations.

    Selected motivations of student sports volunteers in terms of professional activity and previous volunteering experience

    Involvement in sports volunteering is not only a way to improve mental health by increasing a sense of appreciation or respect, but it also allows participants to take on an individual challenge, meet new people, or gain specific knowledge. The aim of this study was to analyze selected motivations of students from the University of Physical Education in Krakow to get involved in sports volunteering during the 2023 European Games organized in their city and verifying them in terms of gender, age, previous volunteering experience, and pursuing a career. A total of 535 students took part in the survey, of whom 52.71% (282) were female, and 47.29% (253) were male. Selected motivation statements were indicated by respondents through a 5-point Likert scale. The results of the completed study confirmed that pursuing a professional career alongside studies and previous experience in sports volunteering had an impact on undertaking sports volunteering (F = 11.754; r = 0.674; p = 0.003 and F = 10.241; r = 0.611; p = 0.002). The obtained research results may be important for sports psychologists and organizers of sports events in the context of recruiting volunteers or improving the process of managing sports volunteering.
