Los sextos cantos de las tres partes de la Commedia —Inferno, Purgatorio y Paradiso— se ocupan de ese drama de forma intensa: como círculos concéntricos, abarcan un espacio cada vez mayor: Florencia, Italia, el —siempre difuso— Imperio (es decir, el mundo políticamente organizado, la oecumene).
